Sun Salutations are the most iconic representation of modern postural yoga. People participate in Sun Salutation-based challenges, make Sun Salutation tattoos, and hang Sun Salutation posters on their walls.
Sun Salutations are a sequence of yoga poses strung together in a consistent movement, typically found in Vinyasa-style yoga. In Sanskrit, Sun Salutations are referred to as “Surya Namaskar” and were traditionally practiced to usher in the new day, hence the name.
In Sanskrit, “Vinyasa” can be translated to mean linking breath with motion in a continuous flow. Thus, Sun Salutations are physically challenging and are an excellent cardiovascular workout.
Start your day with sun salutation!
A recent study of 124 college students who just did Sun Salutations for 20 minutes for two weeks (and did not do any other yoga) found they reported feelings of a quieted mind, feelings of rest, joy and less worry than the control group. If you want the benefits of yoga in a simple, easy to establish home practice morning Sun Salutations are the way to go!
If you have ever taking any yoga the Sun Salutation is already familiar to you because it is generally used by many yoga teachers as the backbone for many other sequences.

Benefits of Sun Salutation
For centuries, people from all civilizations have offered prayers to the sun – the ultimate source of life and energy. One such practice is the yogic sequence of Sun Salutation. Let’s get to know this unique practice better and understand its multifaceted benefits:
Strenght & Flexibility
Regular practice promotes balance in the body
Psychologically, it regulates the interconnectedness of body, breath, and mind, thus making you calmer and boosting the energy levels with sharpened awareness
Full-Body Burn
Challenging posture
Improves blood circulation. Tones the spine, neck, shoulder, arms, hands, wrist, back and leg muscles, thereby promoting overall flexibility
It helps to keep you healthy
Focusing on the breath and strengthens the heart
Stimulates abdominal muscles, respiratory system, lymphatic system, spinal nerves and other internal organs
Why should women do Sun Salutation?
Sun Salutation is a boon for any health-conscious person. Some of the Sun Salutation poses help lose extra fat around the belly and let you stay in shape, naturally. These poses stimulate sluggish glands like the thyroid gland and induce it to increase hormonal secretions. Regular practice of Sun Salutation helps women regulate irregular menstrual cycles and assist in childbirth. Further, it helps the face glow and also prevents wrinkles.
Practicing Yoga helps develop the body and mind, yet is not a substitute for medicine. It is essential to learn and practice yoga under the supervision of a trained Yoga teacher. In case of any medical condition, practice yoga only after consulting your doctor and a Certified Yoga Teacher.
