Yoga for Runners

Yoga for Runners

Yoga is the perfect recovery activity for runners. It relieves soreness and tension in your hardworking muscles and restores range of motion so you can run better the next time you hit the road.

Lots of runners love yoga, and there’s a reason why: yoga brings balance to the pounding of running through providing a good stretch and realignment for the body. When your hips are feeling tight or hamstrings feel inflexible that a good yoga session will stretch out your muscles and provide that satisfying “pop” to your hips and other joints.

Every type of athlete—from a seasoned marathoner to a CrossFit junkie—can benefit from getting on the mat and practicing a bit of yoga. Whether you’re looking to incorporate some easy poses and stretches into your routine after a workout, trying to find stress relief after a long day, or you want to help prevent pesky injuries, mastering some basic yoga moves will accomplish those goals.

Power Vinyasa Fitness Flow Yoga

Power yoga is a wonderful choice for runners since it can double as a strength training workout and flexibility/mobility work. Power yoga is also known as Ashtanga or vinyasa yoga, which refers to how the alignment and breathing transform statics asanas (still poses) into dynamic movements. Poses such as Warrior I, II, and III strengthen the legs, chaturangas tone the shoulders and arms, and most poses will engage the core and glutes.

Especially when I’m spending a lot of time running, I like power yoga to save time while still strengthening my body and stretching out my muscles. Additionally, the strengthening and stretching of running specific muscles such as the hip flexors, glutes, and core helps prevent injury and can help you run more efficiently and with better form. My favorite vinyasa fitness flow provides a total body workout while also stretching any tight muscles and improving posture.

Gravity Yoga® or Targeted Mobility Training for Runners

Gravity Yoga® or Targeted Mobility Training is a mat-based, targeted mobility training method that assists students with tight hips, locked up backs, and screaming hamstrings.

Targeted Mobility Training assists movers to radically change their flexibility, range of motion, and mobility. Who doesn’t need that. This practice uses gravity and time against passive tension to melt into various poses. It is not about the pose – it is about each persons individual practice.

The position is held for 2-5 minutes and this is a mind game right here. But if we hold for longer times in the poses to truly change the length of muscles and fascia.

Targeted Mobility Training is a supplementary exercise. It is designed to complement your other activities. What does that look like? 75% is the sport your train, 25% is targeted mobility training. Once a week – a one hour practice. Then – 15 minutes of key targeted muscles you KNOW are an issue or are overly tight from our sport. This is not a practice to do early morning, or before your specific training. It is to be done after your specific sport training or late evening. It causes you to relax, to be tired, to be open. To practice this before your sport will hinder your performance.

WHO SHOULD PRACTICE GRAVITY YOGA®? Anyone wanting to perform better in their sport OR individuals wanting to move freely in their bodies.

CLIMBERS – open hips, open hamstrings, open shoulders and back…. you need it all!

DANCERS – well that goes unsaid

CROSSFIT – want that ass to the grass, the ability to get low and press deep into your squat!?!?

GOLFERS – rotation – need to swing – then the mobility in the spine is KEY

RUNNERS/TRIATHLETES – ok – you know your hips and hamstrings are screaming tight
